Secularization of Long Live Chairman Mao
CuanDiXiaCun, a village 90 km southwest of Beijing, China, 2006
“Monuments Villa” The village is a common tourist destination because of its preservation on Ming and Qing dynasty architecture as well as the traces of 20th century history. This photograph depicts two contrasting messages: “Long live Chairman Mao” an echoing refrain at the core of everyday life in Communist China and “No smoking within fireproof zone” a warning directed at contemporary visitors. For the local residents, the slogan that was once at the center of their lives is left crumbling in a state of disrepair, yet the practical message that protects their history-imbued dwellings is of utmost personal significance.
